Ojibwe MC and rap artist Thomas X was born and raised in Red Lake, MN. His album “Welcome to the Rez” is all about his experiences growing up in Red Lake, with Ojibwe teachings woven through it. Thomas made it through several traumatic events in his life, from the loss of a brother to surviving a school shooting to battling drug addiction. Along his journey, he embraced his Ojibwe culture and language. He was inspired as a teenager by the Red Power Movement to find strength in his Native identity. Now as co-founder of the independent record label Rez Rap Records, Thomas takes opportunities to speak out both personally and politically, like performing at Standing Rock to protest pipeline construction. He does a lot of outreach in addition to being an MC, collaborating with youth and other artists to empower and spread pride to his people.
