Singer-songwriter Iskwé is a genre-bending Cree/Dené artist from Winnipeg. Her unique brand of trip-hop music is culture conscious, focusing on issues such as the 1,200 missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada. Iskwé, whose name means “woman,” is empowered by her native identity, painting her face for performances and working to promote awareness through music. Her self-titled debut album showcases her passion, both flirting with and breaking from contemporary influences. She was named one of CBC Music’s 10 artists to watch in 2016.
